Overall team / department purpose

- The Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) function is responsible for ensuring compliance with, and the most effective implementation of, all policies in relation to health and safety and environmental matters across our business.

- This includes developing a culture of health and safety across our business through collaborative working and driving continuous improvement as a learning organisation and monitoring and improving our business’s SHE provisions.

Key role priorities

-This role is responsible for assisting the SHE team by coordinating the development and implementation of our business’s SHE strategies, policies, and procedures through the provision of a proactive, comprehensive and high-quality health and safety support service.

Key working relationships

- Being predominantly internally focused, the role holder is required to work with colleagues across our business in supporting the creation and maintenance of an effective safety culture; this includes resolving first line queries and assisting in the delivery of training.

Main duties & responsibilities

- Establish and promote best practice in SHE matters in conjunction with the rest of the SHE team.

- Responsible for ensuring the SHE management system is implemented and maintained.

- Build relationships with key stakeholders across our business, promoting the development of a positive culture and best practice.

- Resolve internal and external customer enquiries, referring those that are not straight-forward to resolve to the appropriate recipient.

- Maintain SHE related registers and documentation, for example, but not limited to Pentana, the accident/incident registers, DSE, Audit/Inspections, SHE training.

- Assist in the DSE process, including carrying out DSE assessments and reviews as required.

- Visiting sites and engaging with colleagues, and managers, ensuring responsibilities are clear and answering technical SHE related enquires.

- Conducting health and safety workplace activities/audits, inspections

- Produce correspondence, documents, reports and presentations to specification using a variety of media.

- Undertake purchasing financial duties as required, for example, but not limited to, processing invoices, requisitioning equipment, and tracking costs.

- Coordinate and deliver training in relation to corporate SHE.

- Participate in the development of further safety, health and environment knowledge and skills to assist the SHE team within the field.

- Where applicable take part in field visits in support of the wider SHE team.

- Complete any other tasks commensurate with the level and nature of the post as delegated by the role’s line manager.

Key measures of success

- Following an incident, within 24 hours a brief summary to be recorded within reporting system.

- Audit scores to be provided to auditee within 24 hours of carrying out an audit.

- 98% DSE Assessment returns across the business.

- Escalate/chase outstanding accident investigations within 24 hours of notification of incident.

- Escalate/chase outstanding SHE team audit actions within 24 hours of expiry.

- Distribute notification of incidents to all concerned parties within 24 hours of the incident.

- Produce Minutes of meetings within 48 hours.

- 100% of incidents to be supported by a minimum of Photographs (if applicable), Risk Assessments, Risk Assessment briefing/signatory document, Witness Statements, maintenance/servicing records & training (if applicable) & TBT records. All documents to be archived within reporting system.

Person Specification

E - Essential criteria / D - Desirable criteria

Education & Qualifications

5 GCSEs (Grade 4 or above) including English and Maths or equivalent relevant qualification/experience (E)

National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (or equivalent) or willingness to work towards the qualification (E)

A good working knowledge of safety, health and environmental requirements and legislation (E)

IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent e.g., SMSTS (D)

Membership of IOSH e.g., Tech IOSH (D)

Experience

Understanding and demonstrable experience interfacing with multiple departments and stakeholders (E)

Previous health and safety audit / inspection experience (E)

Relevant experience, preferably within a housing or construction background (D)

Skills, knowledge & ability

Excellent computer skills, including MS Office Excel and Word, PowerPoint (E)

Strong verbal and written communication skills (E)

Ability to interpret and analyse detailed information (E)

Ability to support productive working relationships (E)

Knowledge of relevant technical information and/or issues in connection with the role (D)
